I drive clients along this road almost every week and I always enjoy the views on the way to Estepona. It’s about an 80 km (49 miles) journey, and it usually takes between 55 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes, depending on which route you take and the traffic conditions.
You can either take the paid AP-7 motorway or the free A7 road, as well as the free section of the AP-7.
Both routes follow the Mediterranean coastline and pass several well-known towns along the Costa del Sol.
Driving via the AP-7 Toll Road (Fastest Route)
The fastest way to reach Estepona from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is via the AP-7 toll motorway.
- The distance is about 80 km.
- Travel time: around 55–60 minutes.
- Toll cost: around €5.70 for passenger cars in the normal season.
During the high-season (June–September and the Easter period), the toll increases to around €9.25.
This road has less traffic and fewer exits, making the journey smoother. Many residents use the AP-7 when heading to the airport early in the morning or when they want a predictable travel time.
Driving via the A-7 Free Coastal Road
The alternative route is the A-7 coastal highway, which runs alongside the AP-7.
- Distance: around 82 km
- Travel time: around 1 hour 10–15 minutes
- Cost: Free
As the A-7 passes through towns such as Fuengirola and Marbella, there are usually more traffic lights and slower sections. However, it is still a popular option if you want to avoid tolls and enjoy a scenic coastal drive.
